Put God First

Oswald Chambers 90x115by Oswald Chambers

Jesus did not commit Himself to them . . .for He knew what was in man —John 2:24-25

Put Trust in God First. Our Lord never put His trust in any person. Yet He was never suspicious, never bitter, and never lost hope for anyone, because He put His trust in God first. He trusted absolutely in what God’s grace could do for others. If I put my trust in human beings first, the end result will be my despair and hopelessness toward everyone. I will become bitter because I have insisted that people be what no person can ever be— absolutely perfect and right. Never trust anything in yourself or in anyone else, except the grace of God.

God Shoots Many Kinds of Arrows

Thomas Watson 90x115by Thomas Watson

"May Your will be done." Matthew 6:10

We pray here, that we may have grace to submit to God’s will patiently—in whatever He inflicts.

Patient submission to God’s will, is a gracious frame of soul, whereby a Christian is content to be at God’s disposal, and acquiesces in His wisdom.

"It is the Lord’s will—let Him do what He thinks best." 1 Samuel 3:18

Response To The Word

A.W. Tozer 90x115by A.W. Tozer

The word of God… is sharper than any two-edged sword. Hebrews 4:12

Men and women who read and study the Scriptures for their literary beauty alone have missed the whole purpose for which they were given. God’s Word is not to be enjoyed as one might "enjoy" a Beethoven symphony or a poem by Wordsworth. The reason: the Bible demands immediate action, faith, surrender, committal. Until it has secured these, it has done nothing positive for the reader, but it has increased his responsibility and deepened the judgment that must follow. The Bible was called forth by the fall of man. It is the voice of God calling men home from the wilds of sin; it is a road map for returning prodigals. It is instruction in righteousness, light in darkness, information about God and man and life and death and heaven and hell. Further, the destiny of each individual depends upon the response to that Voice in the Word!

Narcissists Need Not Apply

Greg Laurie 90x115by Greg Laurie

I have been a Christian for more than 40 years now. The things that impressed me as a younger Christian still impress me, but now other things impress me even more. When I was a brand-new believer, I was very impressed by a powerful preacher or someone with a great musical gift who used it for God’s glory. I am still impressed by those things, but there are other things that impress me now.

What impresses me now is a man who stays faithful to his wife and a wife who stays faithful to her husband for their entire marriage. That is impressive. I am impressed by a Christian who weathers the storms of life and doesn’t become angry at God, but instead comes closer to God. I am impressed by a believer who lives out his or her faith despite setbacks and hardships – and in some cases, severe setbacks and hardships.

Israeli Police Nab 7 Year Old For Stone-Throwing

Chris Perver 90x115by Chris Perver

I find this news kind of ironic. You may remember how that when I was in Jerusalem on Nakba day, I mentioned the unrest in the Arab neighborhood of Silwan, and how Arab youths were throwing stones at the Israeli police. I took a photograph of some of them just seconds after they had rained down a volley of stones on an Israeli jeep that was driving through the area. Most of the youths had concealed their identities with Palestinian keffiyehs wrapped around their heads. But one boy hadn’t, and he looked as if he was only around seven or eight years old. Yesterday Israeli police caught a young boy throwing stones, only seven years of age, from that same neighborhood we were in only two weeks ago. Of course the parents will say that he was only playing, just like any seven year old boy should be doing in a normal environment. And no doubt the liberal media will be making the most of the accusations of ‘police brutality’. But as you can see from the photograph which I took in Israel at the time, this isn’t any normal environment.

"Rapture" At Center of End-Times Storm

Terry James 90x115by Terry James

The couple of weeks just past bring in focus–for me, at least—stark reminders of the times in which we find ourselves, in relationship to Bible prophecy.

Geophysical disturbances wreaking death tolls in the central United States are part of events engendering the sense of the lateness of the hour, prophetically speaking. The tornado that tore apart Joplin, Missouri, killing more than 100 and injuring hundreds, certainly adds to the sense of this being a prophetic hour. Studies show that records for devastating storms, earthquakes, and other such phenomena seem to be falling with each month that passes.

Thunder From Zion

Jim Fletcher 90x115by Jim Fletcher

Benjamin Netanyahu’s triumphant speech to Congress came on the heels of his answer to Barack Obama, who came out of the closet to demand that Israel return to the 1967 borders.

When Obama ordered Israel, during his State Department speech, to withdraw to the 1949 armistice lines, Netanyahu realized he was dealing with the same sort of figure he dealt with a dozen years ago. During the 1998 Wye Plantation meetings, Bill Clinton at least strongly indicated that he would free Jonathan Pollard, the imprisoned Israeli spy. Netanyahu, by making concessions to Yasser Arafat, was assured that he would be leaving Washington to fly back home with Pollard at his side.

Willing and Working

Vance Havner 90x115by Vance Havner

“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in your both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12, 13

This combination makes it all the work of God and yet puts us to work. He does the willing and the working. But we “work out what He works in.”

It is a blessed thing to know and to remind ourselves as we move through each day, “God is working in me to will and do of his good pleasure.” But let us remember the other side of it: “I do always those things that please him” (John 8:29). How few Christians ever think of working out their salvation with fear and trembling in these days of cheap and easy religion! A deep and sober daily concern to please God is the rarest of rarities.

God wills and works, but He moves us to will and work. Our feeble purpose and performance take on real importance when we realize that God is energizing both. The Father hath not left us alone. Therefore we are enabled by Him to do those things that please Him.
