If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell —Matthew 5:30
Jesus did not say that everyone must cut off his right hand, but that “if your right hand causes you to sin” in your walk with Him, then it is better to “cut it off.” There are many things that are perfectly legitimate, but if you are going to concentrate on God you cannot do them. Your right hand is one of the best things you have, but Jesus says that if it hinders you in following His precepts, then “cut it off.” The principle taught here is the strictest discipline or lesson that ever hit humankind.

The ink had not yet dried on my last column that discussed the fact that Barack Obama was woefully unprepared for the presidency and as a result is making deadly missteps in the execution of that role, when news broke of General Stanley McChrystal in essence saying the exact same thing to Rolling Stone magazine. This isn’t just a story to be brushed off. This is a bombshell.
Don’t be distracted by the media comically chastising the General for daring to speak out against “The One” (yes, the same media that hailed military officers who were willing to “speak truth to power” in criticizing George Bush). That isn’t the story.

The Israeli Defense Force Chief of Staff, General Gabi Ashkenazi, told the participants in the International Bible Quiz for Youth held in Jerusalem that the Israeli Defense Force sees the Bible as a guide in the deep and practical sense of the word. General Ashkenazi said that it is no accident that the Israeli Defense Force swears in soldiers with a weapon in one hand and the Bible in the other, a custom that reflects the uniqueness of the Israeli Defense Force and the deep bond of the Jewish people to the Book of Books.

A secret admirer, perhaps a critic, has sent me a gift subscription to Time magazine. I leaf through its pages, stop at the two page layout of “The World” which displays Israel as one of ten world hot spots this week. Israel’s “easing of the Gaza blockade” merits 176 words and comprises a column which is 5 ½ inches by 2 ½ inches. By contrast, China’s “easing” of its financial currency restrictions (which may have major world repercussions) merits only 89 words; the refugee crisis in Kyrgyzstan which has displaced 400,000 ethnic Uzbeks merits only 82 words and a photo. Obama’s Patients’ Bill of Rights is only 65 words; America’s additional resolutions sanctioning Iran merit only 58 words.
